Happy Fall! I can’t believe how fast summer just came and went. As we head into one of my favorite seasons, we find ourselves staying at home more often when the cold comes (at least for us living in the Northeast).
This might mean sprucing up your home right before the holiday season. The best way to do that and achieve that transformation is by painting your home. Painting is an easy, inexpensive way to make a HUGE impact in your home. But where do you start? It can be overwhelming if you don’t know what you have in mind for colors and you really don’t know where to start.

I’m here to provide some sort of design direction when it comes to color. It’s always best to look around at your room and start your color selection off by finding some color you like in your area rug, art piece, light fixture, whatever it may be! At least then you can select a color within that family and maybe even try to color match it when you go to the paint store.
If you’re more of a neutral loving person but all the white selections are way too overwhelming, start with a few whites and order large samples to start (companies now offer peel and stick samples so be sure to ask). That way you can get a sense of how these colors will work with the elements you have in your room already.
It’s always a good idea to look at these samples up on your wall throughout the day. Sometimes the natural or artificial light in your home will allow you to see the undertones in these colors so that will help you rule out some of these options. It could be a good idea to buy pints of paint and some poster board to paint these samples on (or maybe even just paint them on the wall itself).
Here’s an example of pulling some neutral color tones from a rug and as you can see, the paint colors compliment the rug. I find this to be the easiest way to select paint colors. Happy decorating!
